It’s such a powerful and graceful role: Rohit Devda on playing Indradev in Kaamdhenu Gaumata

Prem Sagar and Shiv Sagar's latest mythological venture, Kaamdhenu Gaumata, which is produced under their banner, Sagar World Multimedia, recently went on air. The show features Rohit Devda in the role of Indradev. The actor said he was thrilled when he was offered the role.
"It’s such a powerful and graceful role, and I have always admired mythological characters. So, getting the chance to play Indra, the king of the gods, was a big moment for me," he said.
"At the same time, I also felt a lot of responsibility because these roles are not just acting parts—they come with a lot of respect and expectations from the audience. But overall, I was super excited and grateful," he added.
Asked how he prepared for the role, he said portraying a mythological character like Indradev is very different from regular roles. He said, "I started by reading about who Indra really is—not just the surface-level stories but also what he represents. He is not only the king of gods but also someone who has ego, emotions, power, and responsibilities."
"I watched a few old mythological shows and read some scripts from previous versions. Physically, I worked on my posture and expressions because mythological roles demand a larger-than-life presence. Of course, the costume and makeup helped a lot in getting into that zone. But more than anything, I tried to stay true to the energy and dignity the character demands. It’s a mix of research and practice," he added.
A mythological character requires undergoing physical transformation as well as getting the language or dialect of that time correct. For Rohit, both are challenging, but he said, "If I had to pick, I would say the language and dialect part is slightly tougher. Physical transformation can be achieved with discipline—you eat right, train your body, get into shape, and the costume and makeup take care of the rest."
"But the way mythological characters speak is not everyday Hindi. It is very formal and poetic and has a rhythm to it. You can’t just speak the lines; you have to feel them and still sound natural, which is not easy. Plus, the pronunciations have to be spot-on. So yes, getting that old-world tone and grace in dialogue delivery definitely takes more effort for me," he added.
When playing a mythological character, it's important to maintain a balance between reel and real. The actor said, "When you are playing a character like Indradev—divine, powerful, and larger than life—it is easy to get completely absorbed into that zone. But at the end of the day, I remind myself that it’s a role I’m playing. Once the camera cuts, I make a conscious effort to come back to being Rohit."
He also shared that it feels special to be part of a show that brings to life such a unique and unexplored story from Hindu mythology. He said, "I think that’s the beauty of Gaumata Kaamdhenu—it’s not just another mythological show. It brings forward a story that many people haven’t seen or heard in detail before. As an actor, it’s a big opportunity to be part of something fresh yet deeply rooted in our culture."
"There’s also a sense of pride because we are contributing to telling a story that holds spiritual and cultural value," Rohit ended.
